In this course, you will be introduced to the fundamental theories, concepts and principles of modern workplace health and safety management. You will acquire an understanding of the core concepts of OH&S that are integral to ensuring a safe workplace, and the basic elements of an effective occupational health and safety program. This course is designed for those who either currently have some OH&S-related responsibilities at work, or are interested in pursuing an OH&S career.
Location update: Due to the COVID-19 situation, courses scheduled to start before August 31 in Vancouver or Surrey will move to online-supported delivery.
What will I learn?
After completing this course, you should be able to do the following:
- Describe the historical development of occupational health and safety in Canada and internationally
- Describe the common roles and responsibilities of safety practitioners within organizations
- Identify the major regulatory bodies responsible for OH&S in Canada
- Identify the main categories of OH&S legislation in British Columbia
- Describe the basic elements of an effective health and safety program
- Explain the basic tools and techniques used to improve OH&S performance

How will I be evaluated?
Your grade will be based in part on individual participation. You’re expected to attend all 39 hours of classes, engage in discussions and review all handouts. You must also complete two exams and one written assignment.
